The second-largest city in Zimbabwe is Bulawayo, with only the capital city Harare bigger in size and population. It's a modern and progressive city, the skyline regularly growing with more skyscrapers and new buildings. The wide boulevards are lined with trees, and the city atmosphere is attractively relaxed and calm.
Things to do in Bulawayo
Tshabalala National Park is just to the south of Bulawayo, used as a wildlife sanctuary. You're able to leave your car and walk through parts of the park, getting closer to animals such as zebras and giraffes. The city is the site of the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, which covers a vast range of animal species and monuments. Kids can enjoy the interactive exhibits both there and at the Bulawayo Railway Museum. The collection includes old steam trains and diesel locomotives, as well as some newer examples of Zimbabwe's railway system. Bulawayo is hot and sunny every month of the year, so the city's outdoor swimming pool on Borrow Street is always popular. The stadium-sized pool has a 1920s ambience, with the changing rooms painted in bright colours, and is open all year round.
Visiting Zimbabwe
Flights to Bulawayo arrive a 25-minute drive away from the city, at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport. Take an internal connecting flight to Harare or Victoria Falls, or travel to Johannesburg in South Africa. To get around Zimbabwe, several major roads spread out from central Bulawayo. To the west, the route leads over the border into Botswana.
Shopping
The mix of new shopping complexes and traditional craft stores makes it possible to pick up practically anything you need. When visiting Bulawayo's attractions, you can also make a stop at the gift shop on your way out. The Haddon and Sly Mall includes restaurants, boutiques and offices, and the Zonkizizwe Shopping Complex has a nursery and gift wrapping services.
