Santorini is a Greek Island to the South East of the mainland. The island may only be small at around 35 square miles but it's full of great activities and history – it's even the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever.
Beaches
Most of the beaches here are black sand and surrounded by impressive rock formations. The Red Beach and The White Beaches in particular have gorgeous cliff faces lining their shores, taking their name from the shades of rock. If you're looking for a popular beach then Perissa tourist resort has an impressive and organized space by the sea where you can enjoy the Greek weather. Travel here and you'll find yourself basking in the sun not far from Ancient Thera city remains. To the south of the island you'll find something a little different. Vlychada is a small port with fishing boats and yachts to view, but more importantly the beaches enjoy a more understated feel.
Ancient Thera
Whilst on the island you might want to pay a trip to the ancient and beautiful ruins of Thera, which are named after the mythical ruler of the island. The ruins are easy to get to by either bus or car, despite their impressive position sat 360 metres above the sea on a mountain ridge. The drive up to the ruins can be as enjoyable as the ruins themselves, displaying some great pieces of the island's coast. The site itself only stays open until around 2.30pm so visits are best enjoyed in the morning. Once you've taken in the ruins you might want to try the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Here you'll be able to take the short walk through the halls and see some of the impressive objects recovered from the ancient city.
Food and drink
As with most areas of Greece, you can expect rich delicious flavours, meats like lamb and liver and plenty of garlic and herbs from your Santorin meals. Moussaka is a great dish to try whilst on the island, or for those with a sweet tooth many of the best restaurants will make their own Greek nougat.
