The airport is 20km southeast of the city and provides access to the stunning National Parks and beauty of the African savannah. If you need to relax after your adventures, the coastal city of Mombasa is less than an hour away by plane, providing long stretches of white sandy beaches for you to soak up the sun and Indian Ocean views.
Nairobi is surrounded by spectacular National Parks. The dramatic Rift Valley with its stunning geology, fauna and history is definitely worth a visit, while the winding towards Nakuru offers truly special views and on a clear day you can see for hundreds of miles down to Tanzania.
You can see lions, cheetahs, hippos and giraffes without even leaving the city at the Nairobi National Park and between 11:00 and 12:00 keepers take orphaned baby elephants and rhinos for their daily mud bath. Further afield is the famous Masai Mara National Park. The heart of Kenyan wildlife, it is the best spot in Africa to witness the great wildebeest migration.
Eating and drinking
Nairobi has a surprising range of options when it comes to food and drink. The traditional Kenyan barbeque, Nyama Choma, is a unique experience and for the best local cuisine, the open air all-you-can-eat meat buffet at Carnivore is not to be missed. The waiters serve a never-ending selection of meat, including ostrich, crocodile, giraffe and wildebeest. Until you tip over the white flag on your table the meat will keep arriving. Heritage and art
This is a city steeped in history. Subtle evidence of Kenya's colonial heritage is everywhere you look, from the pink and white colonnades of the Muthaiga Country Club all the way up to the City Hall. Visit the National Museum for an ever-changing display of East African art, or Karen Blixen's House and Museum, the old colonial home of the author of Out of Africa.
Despite the colonial heritage, it's an unmistakably Kenyan city and you shouldn't leave without visiting a Masai market. Any given day somewhere in the city there'll be a local market selling everything from jewellery and clothing to carvings and beads, giving you the chance to take a little piece of Nairobi home with you.
