Wildlife
Situated on the southern city outskirts, Nairobi National Park is one of the area's most popular attractions. There are over 50 different endangered Black Rhinos in the park and if you visit you should also be able to spot lions, hyenas, gazelles, zebras and giraffes. The wetlands in the park are also home to a staggering 400 different species of bird.
Within Nairobi National Park is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, established to help raise orphaned elephants and rhinos and transition them back into the wild. One of Nairobi's most popular attractions, the Trust gives you a chance to get up close to baby elephants as their handlers hand-feed and bathe them.
Another well-known conservation centre in Nairobi is the Giraffe Centre, set up to protect the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. As well as information about the conservation efforts, the centre lets you feed the giraffes from wooden platforms – a unique experience that you won't forget in a hurry.
Museums
To learn about Kenya's wildlife in more details, as well as Nairobi and Kenya's rich human history, the first stop on your map should be the National Museum. On the ground floor you'll find enormous halls of exhibits dedicated to birds and mammals, including the impressive Hominid Skull Room with its extensive collection of skulls. On the first floor you'll find information and artefacts detailing Kenyan and East African History as well as exhibits on Kenya's numerous tribes.
For an insight into Kenya's colonial history, the Karen Blixen's House & Museum is where the author Karen Blixen lived between the years of 1914 and 1931. The National Archives is also a great destination if you're looking to learn more about the colonial and post-colonial history of Nairobi. For an insight into Nairobi's contemporary cultural scene, the Go-Down Arts Centre is a trendy place to catch up-and-coming artists and performers and has regular exhibitions and shows.
Nightlife
Nairobi has some excellent bars, including Gypsy's Bar in the city Westlands and the Colonial-style Lord Delamere Terrace & Bar. If you're looking for live music the family friendly Blankets & Wine event is a great way to watch some East African music, while Live at the Elephant is an upmarket venue that's popular with hip younger crowds.
Kenya
A short drive from the centre of Nairobi is Bomas of Kenya, a fascinating cultural centre celebrating the various tribes of Kenya. There are exhibitions on the arts, music and culture of each tribe as well as a recreated traditional village. There are also performances of traditional dances every afternoon. If you're looking for stunning natural beauty, the Mount Suswa Conservancy is a breathtaking location to explore, based around the Suswa shield volcano and famous for the many caves on its slopes.
