Dubrovnik, pearl of the Adriatic
Dubrovnik's beauty has been lauded ever since Lord Byron called it the pearl of the Adriatic. Home to marble streets, Baroque buildings, old palaces and perhaps the most spectacular city walls anywhere offering views across the sea, the World Heritage site cannot fail to enchant the visitor.
Visit its historic and cultural attractions or explore the ancient back streets and alleys at leisure. Take a cable car to Mount Srd, 450m above the city and enjoy the spectacular views. Or why not join a kayak group and explore the waters around the city? There are beaches nearby and in the afternoon or evening be sure to try the excellent seafood. And there is plenty to do in the evenings with two cinemas showing international films during the summer, a great music festival and a lively nightlife.
Attractions
The main attractions of Dubrovnik, apart from its old monasteries and beautiful palaces, are its medieval walls which are intact and encompass the entire city and port. A tour is a must and provides unforgettable views over the town and across the Adriatic. Any city tour should also take in the Dominican Monastery in the east with its fine cloisters and richly decorated church. Check out too the Franciscan Monastery which has the world's third-oldest working pharmacy. And we haven't even mentioned the cathedral, three historic churches or Sponza Palace, one of the most beautiful in the city which is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance style. Completed in the 16th century, the palace housed the mint, treasury and armoury. Today, it hosts the archives of Dubrovnik.
Arts and culture
Dubrovnik hosts a number of festivals throughout the year including an opera festival in June, an international wine and jazz festival in September and, most famously, a summer festival. This has been staged since the 1950s and features many famous musicians in some 70 venues across the city as well as theatre, opera and dance. In addition, the city has two cinemas – one open air – that show subtitled Croatian and international films. Or why not join a unique walking tour that explores the historic city and the many locations that featured in the cult fantasy TV series Game of Thrones?
Things to do
Apart from trying your hand at water sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving or kayaking, you could also opt for an excursion to Lokrum Island, ten minutes away by ferry. It is a beautiful and quiet getaway, heavily forested with pines, olive, black ash and oak trees, offering good swimming. Or take the short train, bus or car ride across the border to Montenegro and beautiful Kotor Bay.
Eating, drinking and nightlife
Dubrovnik is filled with restaurants and bars. Try Restaurant 360 Degrees for fine dining or Konoba Ribar for good value local food. Lokando Peskarija on the old harbour offers the freshest catch in town. And for a nightspot, try East-West, a beach bar-restaurant cum nightclub.
