Cancun does culture
You can't come to Cancun and not see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chichen Itza. The most famous of the Mayan archaeological sites in the Yucatan, and the best restored, it provides a fascinating insight into how the city would have looked at the peak of the Mayan Empire. Wander amongst the towering pyramids; check out the Great Ball Court, the huge Temple of the Warriors and the Sacred Cenote – where you get to swim in the clear, cold waters.
In the heart of Cancun's Hotel Zone is the Catholic Church of Parroquia de Cristo Resucitado. With large doors and open walls to let in the tropical breezes, it's got a wonderfully light and airy interior. Serving locals as well as visitors, it has Masses in English as well as Spanish.
Not far from here is the Museo Maya de Cancun. Although it's small it's packed with fascinating Mayan and Aztec exhibits. It's in a lovely jungle setting too with Mayan ruins outside.
Breathtaking beaches
The white sands that run along the Hotel Zone extend for some 22km so you've plenty of space to lay your towel. Choose a hotel here and the beach literally is on your doorstep. There's a huge choice of beaches, from the more sheltered waters of the north side (great for children) to the turquoise water and livelier waves of the Caribbean over to the east.
Among Cancun's most poplar beaches are Playa Delfines, Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas but there are plenty of others to choose from. And whether you're looking for a quiet beach where you can just soak up the rays or somewhere that's got beach bars playing music and more of a scene, you're sure to find it here.
Hit the shops
One of the great things about booking your flight and holiday to Cancun with lastminute.com is that you make great savings - giving you more to spend when you're away. Your first temptation may well be the duty-free shops at Cancun International Airport. Once you've made the 20 minutes or so trip to Cancun (it's roughly a 12 mile journey from Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone.) you've plenty more shopping opportunities. Avenida Kukulkan is a good starting point – with everything from designer boutiques to souvenir shops.
