Castle and Palace

High above the city sits Buda Castle and the Royal Palace. And reaching this is a pleasure in itself as you traverse the enchanting streets of Castle Hill to reach the top. The Palace is characterised by its huge green dome and is the home to both the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery. The gorgeous lookout towers of Fisherman's Bastion provide spectacular panoramic views of the city below. And when you've finished looking around, why not take the funicular down to the city?

District V

A part of Budapest that has historic buildings at almost every turn, District V is where you'll find Kossuth Lajos. This square's most notable landmark is the Hungarian Parliament building, on the banks of the Danube. Parliament House is a glorious sight, particularly in the evening when it is lit by over 700 floodlight bulbs that confer upon it a beguiling golden glow. Take a tour inside its lavish interior and see the coronation crown that has adorned the heads of more than 50 kings.

Blue Danube

The innate mystique of the city is enhanced by the glorious River Danube, and what better way to explore some of the city's highlights than by boat? Beautiful Budapest sweeps before you as you pass under the superb bridges of Margaret Bridge, Elizabeth Bridge and Liberty Bridge. And Chain Bridge too, which you must take the time to cross by foot to admire its construction and reward yourself with yet more terrific views of the city. North of downtown Budapest, in the middle of the Danube is Margaret Island, a delightful parkland isle that is a serene part of the city.

Public spaces

Heroes' Square lies at the end of Budapest's prominent boulevard, Andrássy Avenue, and is replete with statues depicting national figures and Hungarian leaders. The adjacent wide spaces of City Park is home to Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest Zoo and a lake and is the ideal place to bring a picnic.

Eating, drinking and nightlife

Traditional Hungarian cuisine typically consists of meat, cabbage and paprika, often taking the form of soup or goulash - dishes that are on the menu at Zeller Bistro. The owners of this family-run restaurant will welcome you into its cosy interior and you'll have the opportunity to taste the wine before you order. District VII is where most of Budapest's night-time action takes place, and its clubs and bars are all within easy walking distance of each other. It's also where you'll find what are known as 'ruin pubs', a phenomenon that hit the city around 2004. Abandoned buildings were transformed in to modest clubs and have since evolved to become some of the highlights of the city's nightlife.
