1. Kick back at the beach

It would be criminal to visit Puerto Rico Gran Canaria and not pop on your shades, soak up some rays and splash in the shallows. The pretty, sheltered beach - surrounded by sheer cliffs - is clean and family oriented. Space is at a premium, and sun beds are even lined up along the length of the jetty; though it can get rather crowded, it’s more low-key than several of its neighbours.

Best for: Beach babies

Nearby alternative: Nearby Playa de Amadores (Lovers’ Beach) is a quieter alternative to Puerto Rico - you won’t find any watersports, ball games or loud music here.

2. Shop at the new Mogan Mall

In desperate need of a retail fix, or just craving the sweet relief of air-con? New for 2020, the Mogan Mall is one of the largest shopping centres on the island. With all the usual suspects - from Zara and Pull and Bear to Adidas and an Apple Store - you can buy anything you want here, then refill the tank at any number of eateries and bars.

Best for: Retail therapy

Nearby alternative: If you’d rather not shop for big-name brands, most towns have a weekly market selling food, flowers and household goods.

3. Go sailing

Puerto Rico has a serious reputation as a sailing centre, and members of its club have brought home an impressive five Olympics medals between them. Naturally, with the masters of the sport at your disposal, sailing is one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria - for experienced sailors and beginners alike. Your first stop should be the Puerto Deportivo, which caters for all visiting water-sports enthusiasts.

Best for: Sailing enthusiasts

Nearby alternative: Budding sailors should also make for Pasito Blanco, a little-visited port and resort about a 20min drive away.

4. Catch a whopper

Not to be outdone by the sailing club, Puerto Rico’s deep-sea fishermen have claimed nearly three-dozen world records in their sport. If you’ve never fished before, that’s no problem either - this is an activity in which beginners can indulge, too. Several varieties of tuna and marlin as well as swordfish and, sometimes, sharks can be found in these well-stocked waters. The deep-sea fishing season is roughly from May to September, but there is bottom-fishing available year-round.

Best for: A relaxing day at sea

Nearby alternative: Gran Canaria is well known for its game fishing. Aside from Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco and Puerto de Mogán are the major centres.

5. Search for dolphins

To experience the sea while someone else does the work, take a trip in a glass-bottom boat - many of these are used for dolphin-spotting tours. Sailing catamarans also ply the waters; some offer on-board barbecues so you can sizzle on deck while your supper sizzles on the barbie.

Best for: Wildlife lovers

Nearby alternative: Excellent boat trips also run from Arguineguín. This is still a working fishing port and community.

6. Lounge by the pool

Conceived in the 1970s, Puerto Rico has sprouted a wall of apartment blocks rising to the top of the hills - like tiers of seats in a giant amphitheatre. If you tire of the crowded beach, book into one of the fabulous hotels and lounge by the pool in peace. A day spent poolside is time well spent, and can be one of the most relaxing things to do in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria. There’s an excellent selection of Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday packages to choose from, too. For an adults-only stay try Canaima Apartments , or - if you’ve got kids in tow - opt for the Servatur Puerto Azul Hotel, with a Jacuzzi for adults and two playgrounds for little ones.

Best for: Leaving the world behind

Nearby alternative:Built round a series of seawater canals with arched bridges, nearby Puerto de Mogán is super pretty.

7. Dive in the deep

There’s a fascinating world beneath the waters off Gran Canaria and a number of excellent diving sites. Pasito Blanco, near Puerto Rico, offers fabulous diving - with ideal conditions for underwater photography, so you’ll have no trouble impressing your Insta followers. For experienced divers, there are two wrecks in the waters off this coast just waiting to be explored. Well, what are you waiting for?

Best for: Underwater wildlife

Nearby alternative:Just over a half-hour drive from Puerto Rico, Playa del Cabrón has been designated a marine reserve for its diversity of fish and vegetation.
