How to reach Meloneras

• Flight time: From London and other major UK airports, flights to Gran Canaria take around 4 hours 30 minutes. Meloneras is 35km south of the airport.

• Transfer time: Meloneras is 30 minutes from the airport by taxi. Shared shuttles are another way of getting to the resort but can take longer if they drop off passengers along the way. Alternatively, a bus runs to neighbouring Maspalomas and takes 45 minutes.

• Price: A taxi from Gran Canaria Airport to Meloneras costs between €40 and €45, while shared shuttles are around €8–€10 per person. The more economical choice is to take the bus, as the one-way price is approximately €4.

Best time to visit Meloneras

Due to its subtropical climate, Meloneras is an outstanding year-round destination. But due to the seasonal differences, certain times of year may be better for the specific things you want to do.

• April to June is one of the best times for Meloneras holidays because it's not too crowded, so you can enjoy the beach and attractions without too many people. The weather is nice and warm; the average temperature is between 20°C and 24°C. Rain is rare, and you can expect 9 to 10 hours of sunshine per day.

• July and August is peak tourist season with hot and dry weather. Temperatures often reach 30°C, which is perfect for sunbathing and water sports. Bear in mind this is when Meloneras is busiest, and accommodation prices are higher.

• September to November crowds begin to thin out a bit. Temperatures remain very warm, between 24°C and 28°C, and the sea is still perfect for swimming. Rainfall is slightly higher, but there will still be 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day.

• December to March are the coolest months but still very mild (19°C to 23°C) – a popular time for escaping to the sun from the UK. Although there is a bit more rain, especially in December, the sun still shines around 6 to 7 hours daily, providing the ideal climate for exploring the island.

• Spoken languages: The language spoken on the island is Spanish but English is widely understood in the tourist resorts such as Meloneras.

• Local habits and customs: On this laid-back island, evening meals tend to be eaten late, around 9 pm, and afternoon siestas are customary, when shops may close.

• Getting around: Taxis are affordable and a reliable form of public transport. Public buses are another efficient way to travel from one town to another; a single ticket starts from about €1.40, while the fare to Las Palmas, the capital, is roughly €6.
