Southbank and Southwark
Since the 1951 Festival of Britain, London’s Southbank has been known as a top destination for entertainment and culture.
Packed with cultural venues, and peppered with lovely urban parkland, the Southbank is right on the River Thames in the districts of Lambeth and Southwark. Here, you can go on the London Eye, or simply kick back in one of the many beautiful green spaces like the Bernie Spain Gardens if you’re looking to unwind.
With so many things to see in this vibrant area while you’re staying at one of our Southbank and Southwark hotels, the difficulty is knowing where to start.
Looking a little further afield, Southwark itself is one of the oldest parts of the capital city, and packed with historic sights, beautiful architecture, galleries and museums. One of the most iconic places in Southwark has to be the cathedral, which dates right back to the 12th century.
Perhaps the most obvious spot would have to the award-winning Southbank Centre. Set along the River Thames, this multiuse complex has everything from music venues to galleries under one roof, and is home to the Royal Festival Hall and the Hayward Gallery.
For a really fun afternoon out or perhaps some family entertainment, you can pop across to Sea Life London Aquarium, the revamped and very spooky London Dungeon, or catch up on some culture at the London Film Museum.
Other popular venues in the local area include The Tate Modern, and the BFI IMAX cinema so there really is something for everyone. For a little downtime, try the gorgeous Jubilee Gardens, or take a stroll further into Southwark to visit the peaceful and moody Nunhead Cemetery.
The Southbank Centre is a hub of action when it comes to eating out, so if you’re heading over there you’ll be able to find everything you need without having to venture too far.
Exploring the wider Southbank, there are plenty of lovely places to grab a bite to eat. Benugo Bar & Kitchen is a trendy venue worth checking out, The Archduke is a great local eatery, Locale – County Hall is popular for Italian food, and Troia specialises in Turkish cuisine.
To book your ideal Southbank and Southwark hotel, have a look around to get somewhere to fit your budget and needs. If you’d like to splash out there are lots of 5-star luxury retreats like Mondrian London at Sea Containers and Marriott London County Hall within easy reach. To get somewhere more budget-friendly, try the nearby Premier Inn London Hanger Lane or the Ibis London Earls Court.
