The village of Woburn developed during the medieval period around the location of Woburn Abbey. The medieval buildings were mostly destroyed during the English Civil War and as the result of a fire in 1724, leading to the village to be rebuilt in the Georgian style. Today Woburn is a charming place to visit, featuring a variety of vintage shops, cosy tearooms and friendly pubs. Woburn's Georgian centre and the Woburn Heritage Centre are both fascinating places to pop into for a few hours, featuring a wide range of exhibitions detailing the history of the area.
Woburn Abbey, also the location of Woburn Safari Park, was founded as a Cistercian Monastery in 1145. The abbey was subsequently rebuilt in the 17th century with further redesigns undertaken in the 18th century. Historically the home of the Duke of Bedford, the abbey is regularly open to visitors. As well as the abbey itself there is a vast area of parkland to explore, encompassing a 3,000-acre deer park and Chinese gardens – perfect for romantic afternoon ambles and fun family picnics.
An immensely popular attraction, Woburn Safari Park can be explored both on foot and behind the wheel of a car. The road safari passes through several different habitats, including the Northern Plains where you'll find bison and zebra, the Savannah Grasslands where you'll find white rhinos and the Kingdom of the Carnivores, home to African lions, Amur tigers and North American black bears. The walking safari passes through several different enclosures, encompassing elephants, sea lions and meerkats.
The safari also has a number of conversation centres, an indoor soft play area and the Go Ape treetop adventure area, offering kids a chance to climb into the canopies and fly down zip wires.
