High Wycombe Hotels

High Wycombe lies among the famous Chiltern Hills and is a great base from which to explore this area of outstanding natural beauty. The West Wycombe estate is an elegant and theatrical country house built by the equally flamboyant Earl of Dashford, the exuberant rake who scandalised much of 18th-century England through his roguish exploits. Frequently used in film adaptions, the house is a Palladian gem more suited to the Italian vineyards than the English countryside. Here you can enjoy the rich architectural style and the gorgeous landscaped park featuring many eccentric flourishes that make this estate truly unique.

Situated within the park are the Hell-Fire Caves. Dug from the earth in the 1740s by the Earl of Dashford, the caves were an atmospheric setting for his riotous Hell-Fire Club gatherings. Containing a banqueting hall and an inner temple complete with an underground river, the caves offer a scintillating glimpse of life in the heady days of 18th century society. Even Benjamin Franklin was a regular.

More respectable dwellings are to be found at Hughenden Manor, home of Benjamin Disraeli. One of Britain's greatest Prime Ministers, the estate is a shrine to his life and work. The museum is very informative on the great Victorian statesman and also includes a fascinating account of the manor's role as a World War II base.

The RAF is a significant presence in the area and it was traditionally the headquarters of Bomber Command. The centre displays two striking models of Spitfire aircraft to honour High Wycombe's crucial role in the Battle of Britain.

An ideal outing for the family can be found at Odds Farm. Offering a mixture of fun, play and education, the farm allows kids and adults to experience a wide variety of adorable animals including piglets, lambs and horses.
