Seahouses Hotels

History

Northumberland's heritage as a historical battleground between Scotland and England means that there are more castles in Northumberland than any other county in England. One of the most impressive examples close to Seahouses is Bamburgh Castle, a dramatic coastal castle in Bamburgh. There have been fortifications of one kind or another on the site of Bamburgh Castle since around 420 AD. The core of the current castle dates from the Norman Conquest, although the Victorian entrepreneur, Lord Armstrong, remodelled the current exterior. Head to Embleton beach and you'll find the ruins of the 14th-century Dunstanburgh Castle, popular with the artist JMW Turner. Make your way to Holy Island and you'll find Lindisfarne Castle and Warkworth Castle or head inland and you'll come across the second-largest inhabited castle in England, Alnwick Castle, used as a setting for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.

Coast and national parks

Northumberland has some absolutely stunning coastline to explore and Seahouses is a fantastic base if you're planning to make a trek. The town is at the midway point of the Northumberland Coast Path, with Bamburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed to the north and Craster and Allnmouth to the south. If you'd prefer to travel along the coast on horseback, the Slate Hall Riding School runs a series of treks and beach rides from Seahouses. Or, if you'd rather relax on the beach, the sands are pretty much unbroken from Bamburgh to Seahouses meaning there's plenty of space to enjoy a beachside holiday with the kids.

Make your way inland and you'll soon come to Northumberland National Park, a vast area of countryside that features an extensive network of routes for walkers of all abilities.

The Farne Islands

A short ferry trip from Seahouses will take you to the Farne Islands. A celebrated destination for bird spotters, the Farne Islands boasts around 23 different species of seabird including around 37,000 pairs of puffins. The area also has a large number of grey seals and is a popular spot for scuba diving. Throughout history hundreds of ships have been wrecked off the Farne Islands – if you'd like the chance to dive into the depths and explore their remains there are a number of companies that offer diving trips.
