Neath Hotels

History

The history of Neath can be traced back as far as the Roman period and there are a number of impressive historical sites to visit surrounding the town. The ruins of Neath Abbey are located close to the Tennant Canal. The Abbey dates from the 12th century when it was founded by Richard de Granville and used by Savigniac monks. The Abbey was subsequently used in the 18th century as a site for copper smelting. Close to Neath Abbey are Margam Abbey and the Stones Museum, dating from 1147 and the only Cistercian foundation in Wales to have an intact nave still used for worship. In the Stones Museum you'll find a collection of inscribed Roman and Celtic stones.

For an insight into Neath's later industrial heritage, the National Trust Aberdulais Tin Works and Waterfall is a fascinating place to learn about the history behind the tin works. Aberdulais is also home to the UK's largest electricity-generating water wheel. Cefn Coed Colliery Museum contains exhibits on the mining history of the area, and the South Wales Miners Museum details the life of a Welsh miner.
