Built by Henry VIII, Hurst Castle was an important artillery fortress and was used to detain 17th-century captives. To get there you can walk along Hurst Spit, which is about three miles long, or, take a boat from Keyhaven, which is less than a mile away. From the castle you'll have incredible view across the Solent
The walk to the castle is a special event in itself but there are plenty of other trails to follow. The Solent Way is a nine mile trek that takes you along the sea wall to Lymington. Or, in the opposite direction, walk along the coast to Barton on Sea, roughly three miles away.
Another great way to experience the Hampshire countryside and coast is by bike. Cycle the Solent Way via a nature reserve or take to the New Forest where you'll have 100 miles of cycle routes that take you through stunning scenery and pretty villages. The paths range from 2 to 21 miles so whether you're new to cycling or a seasoned rider, there's something for you. There are plenty of inviting pubs to stop at too.
With the Solent at your disposal, there's a lot of scope for boat trips. Visit the neighbouring towns of Lymington and Keyhaven or even take a trip to the Isle of Wight, only a 40 minute journey. And for an adrenaline boost, take an RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) for a dash to the Isle of Wight, while taking in views of Hurst Castle and the island forts of Albert and Victoria.
Naturally, the town's proximity to the sea means there's always seafood on offer. The Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant pledges to use the best
