Kingsbridge has been a market town since the early 13th century and takes its name from a bridge that was built during or before the 10th century to link two royal estates called Alvington and Chillington. Nearby South Sands very nearly became the site for the Prince Regent's pavilion before he finally, famously, settled on Brighton.
