Castles and museums

While Invergordon Castle itself was destroyed in a fire, there are a number of iconic castles within a short drive of the town. Foulis Castle, Ardross Castle and Balnagown Castle are all landmarks of the area, and no trip to the Highlands is complete without seeing at least one of them. Invergordon Naval Museuem and Heritage Centre tells the interesting story of Invergordon's past, while the town Arts Centre has regular exhibitions and theatre performances.

Mutiny

One of Invergordon's most well -known historical moments came about in 1931 when 1,000 sailors went on open mutiny. Britain at the time was in the grip of an economic crisis and the National government, led by Ramsay Macdonald, needed to find ways of cutting expenditure. This included reducing the pay of all military personnel. An ensuing mutiny occurred, lasting two days.

Outdoors

If you want to play a round of golf, the 18-hole Invergordon Golf Course is a top ranked place to play. There are also a number of other courses within easy driving distance, including the Royal Dornoch, Brora and Skibo Castle courses. The area has a number of pleasant walks that take in everything from Rosskeen Bridge to the Dalmore Whisky Distillery. There are also plenty of opportunities to relax with some fishing on the nearby rivers and lochs, with permits available at Stoneyfield Lochs Trout Fishery.

Scotland

Head north and east out of town and you'll find yourself on the way to the heart of the Highlands. Head south instead and within a few minutes by car you'll reach Inverness, the capital of the Highlands and home to an impressive array of historical and cultural sites, including Inverness Castle, Cawdor Castle, Inverness Cathedral and the Eden Court Theatre.
