While Invergordon Castle itself was destroyed in a fire, there are a number of iconic castles within a short drive of the town. Foulis Castle, Ardross Castle and Balnagown Castle are all landmarks of the area, and no trip to the Highlands is complete without seeing at least one of them. One of Invergordon's most well -known historical moments came about in 1931 when 1,000 sailors went on open mutiny. Britain at the time was in the grip of an economic crisis and the National government, led by Ramsay Macdonald, needed to find ways of cutting expenditure. This included reducing the pay of all military personnel. An ensuing mutiny occurred, lasting two days.
