The history of the area reaches as far back as the Bronze Age, when Dumnonii Celts built a hill fort on what is today known as Hillsborough. The name of the town itself is a mix of Anglo Saxon and Norse that roughly means, ‘the valley with the bad ford'. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of ‘bad fords' now in Ilfracombe, in fact the area was renowned as a safe port due to the natural shape of the harbour and has hosted ships war ships from the 12th century to the 19th century.
