History and culture
Get to grips with the significant history of Dingwall and the surrounding area by making time for a visit to Dingwall Museum. Free to enter, the museum on High Street offers an intriguing look at life in the town and boasts multimedia displays, special exhibitions and reconstructions.
History fans can also visit Cromartie Memorial car park, the site of an archaeological dig in 2013. Evidence was found here which experts believe points to Dingwall having been home to a Viking parliament in the 11th century.
Stay active
You'll find an excellent choice of walks in the area around Dingwall, including a route up towards the Hector MacDonald Monument offering fantastic views of the surrounding district. The tower was built to commemorate the man known as Fighting Mac, a local soldier who rose through the ranks to become a distinguished Victorian soldier.
Nature lovers can visit Tollie Red Kites RSPB reserve to the south-west of Dingwall for the chance to see some of the area's wonderful red kites, along with visiting breeding birds such as whitethroats and willow warblers.
Days out
If you're planning to stay at one of the excellent Dingwall hotels then be sure to find time to venture further afield. The city of Inverness is only half an hour from Dingwall and has plenty of attractions for visitors to enjoy. Visit Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, take a stroll along the River Ness, enjoy a meal in one of the numerous riverside cafés and restaurants, or perhaps spend time browsing through the unique selection of shops in the Victorian Market.
Take the opportunity to drive next to Cromarty Firth, along the Black Isle, and you'll come to the impossibly picturesque 18th-century Scottish seaport of Cromarty. Drop into Cromarty Court House and pick up an audio tour headset before exploring the town. Relax and soak up the peace and quiet by Cromarty Harbour, before discovering all about one of the notable local residents at Hugh Miller's Cottage.
Eating and drinking
Opportunities to find excellent food and drink are numerous and varied in and around Dingwall. Tina's Tearoom is great for a mid-morning drink or afternoon snack, as is The Courtyard coffee and gift shop.
