Hathersage – an overview

The village, which attracts large numbers of hikers, cyclists and rock-climbers, was just a small farming community until the Industrial Revolution, when Hathersage was home to numerous mills. One of the most famous visitors to the village was Charlotte Brontë, who came here in 1845 and is most renowned for her novel 'Jane Eyre', which was published just two years later. It is alleged that Brontë found her inspiration at North Lees Hall, an enchanting 16th-century tower house that was occupied by the Eyre family and was depicted as 'Thornfield Hall' in her novel.

Eyam Hall and Craft Centre

One of the Peak District's most popular attractions, the Eyam Hall and Craft Centre explores the history of the notorious plague of the 17th century and the sacrifices made by the villagers of Eyam to contain the disease. The site features Eyam Hall, which dates back to 1671 and is one of the best preserved Jacobean buildings in the region, still the residence of the Wright family.

Kedleston Hall

Dating back to the 18th century, Kedleston Hall was a filming location for the successful Hollywood film 'The Duchess' and is revered for its landscaped grounds. The building was pioneered by the distinguished architects Matthew Brettingham and James Paine, although there is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the medieval era.

Other attractions

The birthplace of the much-loved Bakewell Tart, Bakewell is one of Britain's finest market towns and is acclaimed for it 10th-century All Saints Church, a Grade I Listed building. Further afield, you can also visit Chatsworth House, another spectacular stately home with impressive neoclassical sculptures and stunning parkland.
