Haverhill – an historical overview

The town is home to the beautifully preserved 16th-century Anne of Cleves House, which was allegedly gifted to Anne of Cleves, one of King Henry VIII's former wives. In the same century, it survived a devastating fire that destroyed many other historic buildings in the settlement, and is now protected as a Grade II Listed landmark.

The famous clergyman was Nathanie Ward, who was born in Haverhill in 1578 and served as a Puritan minister in New England. In 1641, he produced the first constitution in the New World, seven years after emigrating from England to Massachusetts, an English colony at the time.

What to see in the area

Visit the Haverhill Arts Centre & Cinema, which organises regular live performances throughout the year, from film screenings to dances and theatre shows. East Town Park, meanwhile, is a popular recreational space and features a special maze and a well-equipped children's play area. Just a short drive away is the Colne Valley Railway, a beloved, award-winning heritage railway that originally opened in the 1860s and includes a museum exhibiting historic railway related artefacts.

Explore the enchanting medieval colleges of the University of Cambridge, have a punt on the River Cam, and explore the formidable Fitzwilliam Museum, a world-class arts and antiquities exhibition venue. The university, which was founded by a group of disgruntled Oxford University scholars in 1209, contains more than 29 million books, and is famous for its mathematical bridge. This structure was designed by one of Cambridge's most influential and distinguished alumni, Sir Isaac Newton.
