Haverhill – an historical overview

The town is home to the beautifully preserved 16th-century Anne of Cleves House, which was allegedly gifted to Anne of Cleves, one of King Henry VIII's former wives. In the same century, it survived a devastating fire that destroyed many other historic buildings in the settlement, and is now protected as a Grade II Listed landmark.

The famous clergyman was Nathanie Ward, who was born in Haverhill in 1578 and served as a Puritan minister in New England. In 1641, he produced the first constitution in the New World, seven years after emigrating from England to Massachusetts, an English colony at the time.
