Runaway weddings
Gretna Green first became popular for runaway marriages in 1754 when Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act came into force in England. Under the Act, if a parent of a minor under the age of 21 objected, they could prevent a marriage going ahead. The Act was passed as law in England and Wales but not in Scotland.
The Old Blacksmith's Shop, built in 1712, and Gretna Hall Blacksmith's Shop became focal tourist points for the marriage trade, and The Old Blacksmith's became an attraction in 1887.
The tradition of the local blacksmith and his anvil are lasting symbols of Gretna Green weddings. Scottish law allowed for almost anybody to have the authority to conduct a marriage ceremony, provided that it was in front of two witnesses. The blacksmiths in Gretna were famous for marrying couples and became known as anvil priests.
Attractions
The Gretna Green Story is a must see exhibition set in the Blacksmiths Shop. To this day it still plays host to thousands of weddings each year on a daily basis as people flock from far and wide to be married over the famous Original Anvil. There is also a rare collection of 19th Century horse-drawn carriages, owned by the custodians of the Blacksmiths Shop; one of these carriages carried Queen Victoria.
You can't visit Scotland without sampling a wee dram and The Whisky House at Gretna Green is well-known for its vast range of popular yet unusual blends, and its rare malts.

Alternatively for £1,000 you could opt for the ‘Grand Opening' Package, which includes a meal for 10, drinks package and evening snack.
Food and drink
Though a small village, Gretna Green has a number of eateries. Try a great regional meal with fresh, local ingredients in the Foodhall at Gretna Green, or enjoy a carvery or light snack at the Blacksmiths Restaurant.
Alternatively choose from the large amount of Gretna Green hotels, such as Gretna Hall, whose Anvil restaurant offers an á la carte menu in the evenings.
