A history
This area was inhabited as far back as the Iron Age and was originally a quiet Saxon settlement, featuring a few mills by the Norman period. The demolition of the castle after the English Civil War was a testament to Banbury's prominent role in the tumultuous conflict that led to the destruction of many other medieval castles in the area. At the Reindeer Inn, it is alleged that Oliver Cromwell prepared a plan for the Battle of Edge Hill, which took place near Edge Hill in Warwickshire in 1642 and ended in an inconclusive result for the Royalists and Parliamentarians.
By the time of the Industrial Revolution, Banbury was linked to the Oxford Canal, which enabled the town to acquire large amounts of coal from further north. The town was also home to a thriving wool trade by the late Middle Ages, and held a substantial cattle market until the end of the 20th century.
What to do
See Banbury Museum, which features a tourist information centre and exhibits the town's proud industrial and military heritage. Another site you won't want to miss is the Banbury Cross, which was built in the Victorian period, although several other much older crosses had stood over the settlement until the end of the 16th century.
