Before then, carpets were rare in England, but when Whitty saw large, brightly coloured specimens from Turkey in a warehouse in London, he resolved to create some of his own. The hand-knotted carpets, woven by girls as young as ten, became hugely popular with the rich across the country and are still made in the town. Axminster Museum

Originally a police station and courthouse, Axminster Museum offers an insight into the town's past.
