Hotels in Newport Pagnell
Set in a charming town on the outskirts of Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell hotels are a pleasant base for exploring the beautiful county of Buckinghamshire.
Bridges and markets
Located beside the River Great Ouse, the town of Newport Pagnell was traditionally a popular rest point for travellers. Tickford Bridge on one of the town's main roads is the oldest cast-iron bridge in the world still consistently carrying traffic. From the industrial age onwards the town has grown as a centre for manufacturing, with Taylor's peppered mustard made in the town for over 100 years and Aston Martin still closely associated with the area. The town itself features a number of shops and pubs, and the popular farmers' market pays a visit every month.
Historical buildings
There are a number of historical buildings within easy reach of Newport Pagnell. Woburn Abbey, also the location of Woburn Safari Park, was founded in 1145 and built on the site of a former Cistercian Monastery. The abbey was subsequently rebuilt in the 17th century with further redesigns undertaken in the 18th century. As well as the abbey itself there are 3,000 acres of parkland to explore as well as the attractive Georgian village of Woburn itself. Also close to Newport Pagnell is Bletchley Park, the home of code-breakers including Alan Turing during the Second World War and now home to a fascinating museum about the work done on the site. A short drive away in Buckingham is Buckingham Old Gaol Museum, set in a Gothic 18th-century prison.
Outdoor days
The nearby area of Stowe contains some breathtaking scenery and is well worth the journey. Here you can enjoy an afternoon amble alongside picturesque lakes, gardens and monuments as well as the extravagant Stowe House, originally built by the Temple-Grenville family in the 17th century. Another grand country residence, the 18th-century Claydon House, is a similar distance from the town. If you'd prefer a stroll beside the river, the Grand Union Canal is also close to Newport Pagnell and features a number of walks along the bank.
