Hotels in Dundee

The sunniest city in Scotland, Dundee is the home of The Dandy and The Beano comics, and was a bustling maritime centre during the Industrial Revolution. Today, it is a flourishing cultural hub, renowned for its Contemporary Arts Centre and RRS Discovery ship, which sailed to Antarctica and is housed at the acclaimed Discovery Point Visitor Centre.

What to see in the city:

Broughty Castle

Dating back to 1496, Broughty Castle has survived numerous sieges over the centuries and is now a popular museum. The landmark, which is close to the beautiful Broughty Ferry Beach, is well known for its fine panoramic sea views and is open to the public throughout the year.

The McManus Galleries

Housed in an enchanting Gothic Revival building in the heart of the city, the McManus Galleries exhibit many interesting artistic and historic artefacts, and was designed by the distinguished architect George Gilbert Scott. The museum, which was originally known as the Albert Institute, was opened in honour of Prince Albert and received a multi-million pound refurbishment in the 2000s.

The HMS Unicorn

Launched in 1824 and operated by the Royal Navy, HMS Unicorn is one of Britain's most impressive museum ships although, unlike the RRS Discovery Ship, it did not sale across the world. Consequently, the ship is in a remarkably good condition, and has been an exhibition venue for several decades.

Caird Hall

This opulent hall was completed in 1923 and holds various concerts and other special events throughout the year. The building was pioneered by James Key Caird, who was one of the city's most influential residents and a prominent mathematician.

Where to stay and eat

For pleasant, affordable accommodation in a convenient location, book a stay at the Premier Inn Dundee Centre or the DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee. One of the most luxurious Dundee hotels, meanwhile, is the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa, a 4-star venue that benefits from superb views over the city's attractive waterfront.

Dundee is celebrated for its fantastic restaurant scene and offers plenty of delicious cuisines from all continents. If you're after some classic Italian dishes, dine at the Ciao Sorrento or Bellini restaurants, or head to the Gulistan House for some wonderful Indian and Pakistani food. For great European dishes, choose the Bridgeview Station Restaurant with its excellent views, or try the Cobbies Bar and Kitch Inn for some delightful vegetarian and seafood recipes.

Further afield: the abbey town of Arbroath

Visit the charming seaside resort of Arbroath, which was an important monastic settlement in the late medieval period, when the 12th-century Arbroath Abbey was built. Today, this abbey is one of the region's leading tourist attractions and is famous for its iconic red sandstone and imposing towers.
