Things to do:
If you're a keen golfer, enjoy a game at Montrose Golf Links and you will be playing at one of the oldest golf courses in the world. Founded over 450 years ago, it offers two 18-hole links courses framed by the beautiful coastal landscape of Montrose.
The town itself offers a choice of shops, cafés and restaurants, making it an interesting place to have a stroll or sit and watch the world go by. Jutting high above the town stands the 220ft steeple of Old and St Andrew's Church, built by James Gillespie Graham in 1834. Look out for the bronze statue of Bamse, the enormous St Bernard dog, which can be found at Montrose Harbour. A loyal crewmember of the Thorodd, a minesweeper for the Norwegian Navy during WWII, his brave exploits and loyalty shown to his master made him legendary.
Within sight of the town, you can find the Montrose Basin, the largest tidal salt-water lagoon in the United Kingdom. It's now a nature reserve of global acclaim, managed by The Scottish Wildlife Trust. There is access to excellent telescopic and televisual views from Rossie Braes, where you can witness the arrival of many different migratory birds throughout the year.
The House of Dun can be found just outside the town, within easy walking distance of Montrose Basin. Designed by William Adam and commissioned by David Erskine, it began construction in 1730. The result is a fine example of a small Neoclassical mansion, with elegant interiors and many historic items to admire. If you're willing to travel a little further afield, a trip to Glamis Castle in Angus to see the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother won't disappoint. Discover the secrets of this ancient building and explore the manicured grounds for an enjoyable day out.
Montrose Music Festival is held annually at the end of May, where people gather to listen to live music over a period of three days. Known as the MoFest, it's grown to be one of the largest free festivals in Scotland, attracting bands such as Status Quo, Deacon Blue and The Proclaimers to the stage.
