Where to visit in and around Cancún

Cancún Underwater Museum

No matter how many famous museums or heritage sites you've visited in your life, you'll never find anything quite like theCancún Underwater Museum. As the name would imply, this is an aquatic exhibition comprising hundreds of sculptures, many of which are naturally covered in algae to create habitats for marine life and to protect species from storms.

Day trip ideas:

Xel-Ha Park

A spectacular aquatic theme park, the Xel-Ha Park celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014 and comprises a breathtaking lagoon and inlet. The attraction also includes a natural aquarium, where visitors can observe many beautiful tropical fish, and is the perfect place for snorkelling and swimming thanks to its sheltered location.

Coba

Established approximately 2,000 years ago, Coba was once a strategic trading centre, although the settlement became derelict soon after the Spanish settled in the area in the 16th century. The site, which has two lagoons, was not fully explored until the 20th century, and is dominated by the 130 feet tall Nohoch Mul pyramid.

Chichen Itza

Established in the Late Classic period, Chichen Itza welcomes more than a million visitors annually and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Probably the most striking feature of this attraction is El Castillo (The Castle), which is more than 1,100 years old and is one of the best-known Mesoamerican monuments in the country.
