How to get to Mexico City Stadium?
The legendary Estadio Azteca is in the south of the city. The classic route is taking Metro Line 2 (Blue) to its southern terminus, Tasqueña. From there, you transfer to the Xochimilco Light Rail (Tren Ligero), which takes you directly to the Estadio Azteca station. The station has been recently renovated for the tournament and is just a few steps from the stadium’s main plaza.
Be prepared: the Metro and Light Rail will be incredibly crowded, especially on match days when Mexico are playing, so brace yourself for a lively journey alongside local fans. Allow at least two to three hours to reach the stadium from the city centre (Zócalo or Reforma). Traffic in Mexico City is some of the heaviest in the world, so the rail is always faster than a car.
You will need a Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada (Integrated Mobility Card), which costs about 15 Pesos and can be topped up with credit. Most stations now also support contactless "tap to pay" with international bank cards, though having a physical card is a good back-up.
Travelling from the airport to the city centre
From Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX), the Metrobus Line 4 is the best option for tourists. It runs in a dedicated lane directly to the Historic Centre (Zócalo) and is much faster than a standard bus. If you prefer a taxi, only use the official airport taxis (buy your ticket at a booth inside the terminal) or Uber, which is very affordable in Mexico City.
