The best place to stay for World Cup 2026 in Houston is Downtown or the EaDo (East Downtown) district. EaDo is the city’s premier football destination, home to many of the best sports bars and walking distance to potential fan sites near the convention center. For supporters wanting to be closer to the stadium, the Medical Center and Astrodome areas are the best bets. These districts are located just north of NRG Stadium and offer a high density of hotels that cater to stadium events, putting you right in the middle of the match-day tailgating culture.
Looking for budget accommodation? Explore the University of Houston area or the outer rings of the Energy Corridor. These neighbourhoods offer more affordable hotel options and are connected to the main tournament hubs via Houston’s extensive bus and light rail network, ensuring you can save on rooms while staying in the thick of the action.
Houston’s METRORail Red Line is the secret to a successful trip. It connects Downtown, the Museum District, and the Medical Center directly to the stadium. Staying anywhere along this line allows you to traverse the city's main fan areas without needing a car.
For airport access, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is served by the METRO Bus 102, which runs to downtown.
Seven matches will be played in Houston. Must-watch: Expect big celebrations when Texas hosts a Round of 16 match on the 4th of July, American Independence Day.
Houston is a sprawling city, but its METRORail system is incredibly efficient for reaching NRG Stadium from the main hotel districts.
The METRORail Red Line is your primary route. It runs straight through the city centre (Downtown), the Museum District, and the Medical Center, dropping you off at the Stadium/Astrodome Station. The journey from downtown takes roughly 25–30 minutes and the station is a very short walk from the stadium entrance.
On match days, trains run every 6–10 minutes. It’s one of the easiest stadium commutes in the US, but still allow an extra hour for security and crowds.
Houston has updated its ticketing system to support contactless bank cards and mobile wallets - just tap as you board. You can also use the RideMETRO app to buy digital tickets in advance.
From Bush Intercontinental (IAH), the Bus 102 runs to Downtown, but most visitors prefer to use Uber or Lyft - taking about 30-45 minutes - to navigate Houston's vast layout on first arrival.
If you’re at Hobby Airport (HOU), you’re much closer to the stadium - a taxi will get you there in about 20 minutes. To get from HOU to Downtown hotels, you'll need Bus 40.
The METRORail Red Line is the only way to go. It runs directly from downtown and the Museum District straight to the Stadium/Astrodome station. It’s cheap, clean, and avoids the nightmare of stadium parking.
Give yourself at least 2 hours to get from Downtown to NRG Stadium. It's a straightforward journey on the METRORail, taking about half an hour but you'll want to allow extra time for crowded trains and queues to get through security at the stadium.
Stay in the Museum District or Downtown Houston. Both are on the train line, giving you a 15-minute commute to the stadium and putting you near the city's best restaurants and bars.
The EaDo (East Downtown) district is the unofficial fan hub. It’s packed with breweries and sports bars. The official FIFA Fan Festival will be located in the Hermann Park area, which is easily accessible by train.
It will be extremely hot and humid. Houston is one of the most humid cities in the US. Temperatures will be around 33°C, but the "real feel" will be higher. The good news? Texans are prepared for summer heat - so, NRG Stadium is fully air-conditioned and has a roof.
Downtown and the stadium corridor are safe for fans. As with any large city, stay aware of your surroundings at night. Stick to the main trainlines and well-populated areas like Midtown and EaDo.
It is a massive city that isn't very walkable. Outside of downtown and the Museum District, you will need a hire car or taxi apps to get around. Make sure your ESTA is sorted at least 72 hours before you fly. This is essential for British travellers entry to the United States, along with a valid passport. Check your travel insurance is up-to-date and that medical cover specifically includes the USA. Keep legal ID on you - US law is very strict; even if you’re clearly over 21, most vendors are required to scan a photo ID when you're buying alcohol. A passport is your safest bet, as some places will only accept a US driver's license or other state-issued identification.
Yes, you can book everything from luxury hospitality packages to more basic bundles. If you’ve already sorted your match tickets, booking a Flight + Hotel package will take the stress out of travel logistics so you can relax and enjoy your World Cup experience.
Check for hotels near the Medical Center. It’s right on the train line between downtown and the stadium, and often has better rates than the luxury hotels in the city centre.
