Flight time: Flights to Kalamáta take about 3 hours 45 minutes from London and slightly less from Manchester and Birmingham. Most flights operate between April and October.
Transfer time: From Kalamáta International Airport, Stoúpa is a scenic 50-minute drive, primarily along well-maintained but bendy coastal roads.

Vibrant wildflowers, sun-soaked beaches or a relaxed cultural experience? The best time for your Stoúpa holidays depends on what you want.
May to June experiences highs ranging from 25 to 30°C, minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine – warm enough to spend time on the beach (sea temperatures are between 19°C and 23°C), but still comfortable for hiking and exploring the Mani Peninsula.
July to August is the busiest and hottest period. With the mercury hovering around 32°C, only the slimmest chance of rain and up to 13 hours of daily sunshine, this is the perfect time for a lively beach holiday.
September to October sees temperatures dip from 29°C to 25°C, while rainfall picks up (nothing drastic, a few light showers). With the sea retaining much of its summer heat, these are lovely swimming months, but the tourist season is in wind-down mode.
November to April is cooler (highs falling from 20°C in November to 15°C in January before climbing up to 21°C in April), wetter (rainfall is highest in December and January, but you’ll still get a few sunny spells) and quieter (some accommodation and restaurants close, but Stoúpa is not one of the places that turns into a ghost town out of season). If you’re willing to compromise on the weather, these are the months to see the village at its most authentic.
Spoken languages: Greek is the official language, but some English is spoken, especially in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas. Learning basic Greek phrases, such as “Kaliméra” (good morning), is always appreciated.
Currency: Greece uses the Euro.
Getting around: KTEL bus services connect Stoúpa to Kalamáta and other nearby towns. Tickets cost around €4–€6. For short distances, taxis are available and reasonably priced. Hiring a bike is also an option. If you wish to explore the region more broadly, car hire day rates start around €35.
Electricity and plug types: Greece uses the standard European 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. You’ll need a travel adaptor for two-pin type C and F plugs.
Time zone: Greece is 2 hours ahead of GMT (3 hours during Daylight Saving Time).
Whether you're making the most of the local beaches, kicking back at a laid-back bar or taverna, delving into ancient history or exploring the area, holidays to Stoúpa promise an unforgettable experience.
Kalogria Beach: Feathery tamarisk trees, golden sand, crystal-clear waters with bubbling springs – the views at the southern end of the bay are especially lovely.
Mount Taygetus: For adventurous visitors, the ascent to Profitis Ilias, the peak of Mount Taygetus, rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Peloponnese and the distant islands.
Stoúpa promenade: Backing Stoúpa Beach, this lively waterfront area offers a selection of tavernas, cafés and shops, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely evening stroll or a relaxed meal by the sea.
Viros Gorge: Running from nearby Kardamyli into the Taygetus Mountains (the route starts at the dry riverbed near the old town), with trails weaving through ancient ruins and olive groves. It’s a moderately challenging trek, but the scenery is spectacular.
Mourtzinos Tower: Housed in Mourtzinos Tower in Old Kardamyli, this informative museum is the go-to if you are interested in the history of the Mani region.
Historical and Folklore Museum (Androuvista): Slightly further afield in Exochori (a 25-minute drive away), this museum has everything from local costumes and handicrafts to traditional homeware and agricultural tools.
Lefktron Castle: Overlooking Stoúpa, there’s not a whole lot of castle left (basically the remnants of the keep and cistern). Still, it’s an enjoyable scramble up, and the views of the surrounding countryside are fantastic.
Church of St Peter: Located in Kastani (a 15- to 20-minute drive into the mountains), this beautifully restored Byzantine church is the village’s pride and joy. And no wonder its 13th-century frescoes are superb.
Areopoli: An hour away, Areopoli offers Mariot Tower, houses religious monuments (the Church of Taxiarches stands out) and the excellent Museum of Pikoulakis Tower, which showcases ecclesiastical art.
Diros Caves: A little further south from Areopoli, these flooded caves are a must-see, as much for their extraordinary history of human inhabitation as the sculptural crystal-encrusted stalactites and stalagmites.
Stoúpa is an excellent destination for a laid-back family beach holiday.
Beaches: Kalogria Beach has a wider sweep of powdery sand (all the better to build sandcastles with) and safe, shallow waters (the water temperature tends to be a smidge colder than at Stoúpa Beach due to the freshwater springs), but both are family-friendly.
Playgrounds: There’s a playground by Pantazi Beach, but the play equipment is a bit tired.
Interactive workshops: Local art studios and pottery workshops often run classes where children can get creative and take home a unique souvenir.
From do-nothing beach days to cultural tours and evening entertainment, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the most out of your Stoúpa holidays.
Free events and festivals: Keep an eye out for posters and blackboards promoting live music nights at restaurants and bars and local festivals, typically featuring traditional music, dancing and food.
Free self-guided tours in Stoúpa: Clio Muse offers an app-based tour on Alexis Zorbas (the real-life inspiration for the character Alexis Zorba in Nikos Kazantzakis’ famous novel Zorba the Greek).
Beaches: Enjoy Stoúpa’s pristine coastline for free. In 2024, Greece introduced new laws stipulating that 70 percent of all Greek beaches must be sunbed-free, so you’ll only have to pay for one if you can’t live without your creature comforts.
Watch a sunset: Stoúpa and Kalogria beaches are top spots for a seascape sunset.
Hiking: The walk from Stoúpa to Kardamyli is a favourite, offering breathtaking sea views.
Cycling: Stoúpa and the surrounding Mani Peninsula feature numerous scenic cycling routes, ranging from the paved coastal path between Stoúpa and Agios Nikolaos to more challenging mountain trails.
Rock climbing: Adventure seekers can try rock climbing at spots like Kalamitsi Crag (suitable for beginners and experienced climbers).
Scuba diving: With dive sites ranging from underwater springs to an uninhabited island surrounded by marine life and excellent visibility, there’s no excuse not to get under the water on Stoúpa holidays. Dive Code at Kalogria Beach offers a range of PADI courses, dive packages and equipment rental.
Snorkelling: More secluded, pebbly Delfinia Beach (a short drive north of Stoúpa) is popular with snorkellers.
SUP and kayaking: The calm, crystal-clear waters of Stoúpa’s beaches are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Equipment rental is readily available along the beachfront.
The local food scene is definitely one of the highlights of Stoúpa holidays, whether it's a restaurant in the village or one of the Stoupa and Kalogria beachside eateries.
Marouli: Salads don’t get much simpler than this. Lettuce and olives in oil.
Moussaka: Arguably Greece’s best-known dish, layered aubergines, minced meat and béchamel sauce seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Taramasalata: Made with mashed potatoes or bread, lemon juice, olive and fish roe, this creamy dip is perfect with a pitta triangle.
Garides Saganaki: Another classic, sautéed shrimp in a tomato sauce with feta cheese.
Kleftiko: Melt-in-you-mouth-tender slow-cooked lamb baked in parchment or foil with potatoes, lemon and herbs.
Stifado: Usually made with beef, onions, tomatoes and wine, there’s a reason this one-pot stew has found favour across Greece.
Chtapodi Sti Schara: Marinated octopus grilled over charcoal and finished with lemon, olive oil and a sprinkle of oregano.
Fagrii: Known for its firm texture and subtle earthiness, porgy (common sea bream) is most often grilled whole with olive oil and lemon.
Souvlaki: Grilled to a smoky finish, these marinated pork or chicken skewers are usually served with pitta bread, salad and Tzatziki or yoghurt.
Gyros: A street food icon – spit-cooked meat, thinly sliced in pitta with salad and a yoghurt-based sauce.
Baklava: Made with paper-thin pastry, chopped nuts and honey or syrup, this age-old dessert is tooth-jangingly sweet.
Loukoumades: These doughnut-like fritters are traditionally served with honey, cinnamon and chopped nuts.
Ouzo: Great with meze, Greece’s signature anise-flavoured spirit is best drunk (ideally sipped) with water (it packs a punch neat).
Assyrtiko: Most associated with Santorini, good Assyrtiko wines are also produced in Mani. These full-bodied, dry whites go well with fish and seafood.
