How to reach Athens

• Flight time: Flights to Athens from London and other major UK airports take around 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours.

• Transfer time: Athens International Airport is within a 40-minute metro or taxi ride of the city centre. Journey time by bus averages 1 hour.

• Price: One-way metro tickets cost €9; bus tickets €6. Taxi fares from the airport to the city centre are fixed. You’ll pay €40 if you travel between 5 am and 12 midnight and €55 at all other times.

• September to November sees temperatures drop from 29 to 18°C and increased rainfall (16 to 75mm). With fewer tourists and 9 to 5 hours of sunshine daily, Autumn is an excellent time for relaxed exploration.

• December to February is Athens’ off-season. With the city flying under the radar as a winter escape, these are the months to enjoy Athens with the locals. You’ll only get about 4 hours of daily sunshine, and you’d better pack an umbrella, but high temperatures average 14°C.

• Spoken languages: Greek is the official language; however, most Athenians can speak English.

• Currency: Greece uses the euro (€).

• Getting around: From buses and trolleybuses to trams and trains, Athens’ transport network will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. The city has a unified ticketing system. ATH.ENA smart tickets can be purchased at transport ticket offices or automatic vending machines. A 90-minute single ticket costs €1.20, 24-hour tickets €4.10 and 3-day tourist tickets €20.
