How to reach Gambia

Flight time: Flights to Gambia, from London, take around 6 hours. Direct flights are available from London, especially during the winter. From other airports, flights usually connect via London or hubs in Europe.

Transfer time: From Banjul International Airport to beach resorts like Kololi or Kotu takes about 30 to 45 minutes by taxi or private transfer. The drive to Banjul is around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Price: A taxi from the airport to the resorts costs from D700 to D900 (£7.50–£9.50). Many hotels can arrange a private transfer, which can be booked in advance for a similar price.

Weather and best time to visit The Gambia

The Gambia enjoys a warm, subtropical climate with year-round sunshine, but with a wet and a dry season. Here’s a guide to what you can expect through the year:

• November to February is the best time for holidays to Gambia, as it's the dry season with virtually no rain. Daily temperatures are commonly between 24°C and 30°C and humidity is low, making it perfect for days at the beach or watching the wildlife.

• March to May sees a continuation of the dry season but with rising temperatures, up to around 35°C. Still a great time for beach lovers, excursions inland might be quite hot and sticky. Rainfall remains scarce, and visitor numbers are lower than in peak season.

• June to October is the wet season, with particularly heavy rains in July and August, although many of the showers are at night. Temperatures still hover around 30°C, but the humidity is higher. While it’s not the best weather for beach holidays, it's still possible to enjoy visiting at this time of year. Also, the countryside comes alive with greenery and birdwatching is particularly good.

• Spoken languages: English is the official language, making it easy for UK visitors. Languages such as Mandinka, Pulaar and Wolof are also spoken by the local people, especially in rural areas.
