Unusual baggage and special allowances

While most of us just need to worry about a suitcase - for those going on a winter ski break or golfing holiday there’s what to do with your sports equipment. Musicians also have to think about storing their delicate instruments safely when they travel abroad. And while most of us travel for pleasure, if you’re going away with work, you need to consider how to transport your tools.

Knowing what sports equipment you can and cannot bring as hand luggage when travelling can save you time and hassle. Always check with your airline before packing sports equipment or musical instruments in your hand luggage. By doing so, you can ensure that your equipment arrives at your destination without any issues, and you can have a stress-free travel experience. We’ve put together a handy guide for working out what you can and can’t take in your hand luggage.

What sports equipment can I take as hand luggage?

While we realise you’re relatively unlikely to be carrying on harpoon guns or crossbows (even for hold luggage you need to alert the airline) - there is a surprising amount of sports equipment you can’t carry your hand luggage.

You can’t take cricket or baseball bats for example onto the plane - they need to go in the hold. It’s the same for darts and martial arts equipment. Some exceptions include tennis raquets and snooker cues, which can be taken in your hand luggage.

Make sure you check with your airline when taking things like golf clubs and skis - as there can even be rules for hold luggage (as well as travel insurance).

Can I take my musical instrument as hand luggage?

Musicians who travel frequently may also wonder if they can bring their instruments with them as hand luggage. Smaller instruments such as clarinets and flutes in hard cases are typically allowed in the cabin. However, larger instruments may require special arrangements and may even require booking an extra seat. As musical instruments can be valuable, we suggest checking with your airline and ensure that you have appropriate insurance coverage.

Can I take work tools in my hand luggage?

If you're travelling for work and need to bring your tools with you, it's important to note that nearly all work tools, including hammers, screwdrivers, and blow torches, must be checked in as hold luggage. You can find a full list of prohibited items on the TSA website.
