Grab a lastminute.com Toulouse flight to stay in one of south-west France's favourite holiday destinations. The city has a great climate, making for some lovely walks along the central Canal du Midi.
Food and restaurants
The food in Toulouse takes many forms. However, there are a few area specialities that you have to try on your trip. The local cheese is Roquefort, made from sheep's milk, and like any French speciality it is available in abundance from the local shops. For something a little more substantial the Cassoulet and Toulouse Sausage offer an option to get your teeth stuck into. You'll find both at almost all of the local restaurants, but if you're looking for a real selection try La Cave au Cassoulet. This traditional restaurant is in a good location, not far from the university, and serves up great portion sizes.
The region is probably best known for its deserts, and you'll find it easy to choose a sweet pudding after your meal. Fans of marzipan should try the Fenerita cake at one of the many restaurants. To grab a quick something to nibble on, try Pave du Capitole, a Toulouse dark chocolate sweet.
Drinking the local wine
The tomato base to the typical local Cassoulet makes for a great pairing with the Cahors Wine if you want to sample something local. Although you won't be stuck for somewhere to wet your whistle, Brasserie and
Wine Bar Toulouse Lautrec is a firm tourist favourite. You'll quickly understand why too. When you arrive inside you're greeted with a beautiful French feel. The wooden floor and delicate chairs of the Brasserie surround a piano that, if you're lucky, could well be in full swing on your arrival.
Explore the city
On your travels through the city there's a range of things to do. To take in some of the local culture you can visit the Museum of Natural History at the Botanical Gardens for an afternoon, both indoors and outdoors. The Theatre du Capitol is in prime location in Capitol square, with plenty of good looking architecture to photograph alongside it. As you move through the city you'll see the importance of religion here, and as usual the religious buildings make for some great visits. The Church of les Jacobins seems to defy gravity, whilst the Cathedral of Saint Etienne stands proud in the city centre.
Of course, a walk along the canal or even a bike ride to see the water at Le Bazacle can be a nice way to keep the whole family moving, and in the French summertime it can be a lovely way to venture out and enjoy a picnic along the way.
