Top sights include the Sree Anantha Padmanabha Temple, which is the epicentre of the city in terms of culture and history. It’s even said that the city was built around it. The Ramanayar Palace Museum is packed with regal antiquities, while the beautiful Kuthiramallikka Palace is definitely worth checking out, not least as it’s the staging ground for lots of the city’s events. Aside from its many galleries and museums, you can also have a relaxing day at The Zoological Park with its botanical gardens and reptile house. Pop to world-class stretches of golden sand like Shanghumukham Beach, or visit the Veli Tourist Village to do a bit of watersport.

The dining scene in Thiruvananthapuram is diverse, with eateries serving anything from western staples, to Chinese cuisine. Trying some South Indian food is a must while you’re there though. In the city’s gorgeous, local restaurants you can sample dishes like fish and coconut curries, and rich prawn masalas. And for drinks, try karikku, made from coconut milk, and some of the lovely fresh juices.
