Big and brash, the City of the Angels is probably best-known for its principal attractions, Disneyworld and Hollywood, but it is also a city with more museums and theatres than any other American city and is home to world-famous venues such as the Hollywood Bowl. Take a hike through Runyon Canyon Park or cruise up to Mullholland Drive, featured in countless Hollywood movies.
Los Angeles is also a shopper's paradise and when you're looking to get away from the hurly-burly, pack your costume, towel and suncream and head for Santa Monica Beach.
Arts and Culture
Los Angeles has two major art galleries. Los Angeles County Museum of Art is packed with great art from the likes of Rembrandt, Magritte and Cezanne. The Getty Centre, perched high in the hills and offering spectacular views, is an attraction in its own right. The ultra-modern building, which was designed by Richard Meier, houses a collection that spans from Renaissance art to David Hockney.
Los Angeles claims to stage more theatre productions a year than anywhere else. Hollywood Pantages Theatre presents Broadway hits while the Kathy McCrohon Dance Centre (KMDC) is one of the West Coast's largest producers of dance. Take in a concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry.
Or make it a night to remember and book to see a concert at the iconic Hollywood Bowl which hosts an annual jazz festival, classical and pop concerts.
Attractions
For families in particular, Disneyworld will be a first choice along with Universal Studios' Hollywood, also a theme park. Make a splash with Jurassic Park - The Ride. Test your mettle on Revenge of the Mummy, an indoor ride that reaches speeds of up to 40mph with sharp drops and turns. Other obvious attractions include the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Hollywood sign.
Another iconic attraction is Griffith Observatory on Mount Hollywood which includes a range of space-related displays and a state-of-the-art planetarium. And find time for Los Angeles Zoo.
Eating and drinking
Los Angeles, with its rich mix of cultures, is probably home to most types of cuisine under the sun. To experience an authentic American Diner go to Mel's Drive-In in West Hollywood while L & E Oyster Bar attracts local and celebrities alike with raw and grilled oysters and smoked mussels.
For a reasonably priced slice of the good life head to the award-winning Lucques in West Hollywood, voted one of the city's best ten restaurants.
Nightlife
Ye Olde Kings Head offers darts, footie and real ales. Or sip your excellent Martini and see who comes through the door at Bar Marmont on Sunset Boulevard. Thom Yorke has been sighted.
Moving on, try The Viper Room, also on Sunset Boulevard which is one of the main rock act hang-outs. River Phoenix met his untimely death here.
Shopping
If you're after some serious shopping Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu are suggested, unless you can afford Beverley Hills prices.
