Bora Bora, known as the “Pearl of the Pacific, sits in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, between the Americas and Australia. Surrounded by a vast coral ring, its lagoon is considered the most beautiful in the world, and its many islets are lined with coconut trees and white-sand beaches. Getting there
Flights to Bora Bora from the UK take around 31 hours, with two or three stops in places such as New York, Los Angeles and Tahiti. Bora Bora’s airport is on the nearby islet of Motu Mute, and Bora Bora is just a short boat ride away.
Mountain climbing
There are many activities to do while you’re here, and not only water-based ones. If you’re really fit, you can try the arduous climb up to Mt Ohue (619m) and Mt Pahia (661m), two of Bora Bora’s iconic summits. Taking up to six hours, with some difficult uphill scrambles and a few treacherous sections, it’s not an easy option, but the panoramic views will be etched in your memory forever.
Jeep Safari
For $91 you can enjoy an adventurous three-and-a-half-hour ride around Bora Bora on a 4X4 Jeep Safari. You’ll visit three villages and four lookout points, where you’ll get an amazing view over the lagoon, and the site where US Army cannons remain from WW2.
Aqua Safari and Aquabike
From $79, you could go for an underwater walk with an air-supplied helmet, and find yourself surrounded by tropical fish. The two-hour excursion includes a boat tour and snorkelling in the lagoon. Or how about an aqua adventure – for $243 you can be submerged in Bora Bora’s turquoise lagoon with an underwater scooter. Immersion is done from a hydraulic platform and an experienced diver will accompany you.
Rent a boat
For the adventure of a lifetime, why not rent a 23ft boat for two or more hours? You will have an experienced, knowledgeable guide who will take you to untouched motus (islets) and coral gardens, where you’ll snorkel and swim with sharks and rays. This will cost you around $360, and the boat can seat six.
Food and drink
Experience an evening at the famous Bloody Mary's restaurant, which is often frequented by celebrities and is known for its fresh food, signature cocktails and great ambience. For a lower fee, try dinner at the Maikai Restaurant, where you’ll experience an elegant evening of scenic views and delicious international, French and traditional Polynesian cuisine.
Nightlife
On Bora Bora, the sun goes down at around 18:00, and all establishments shut down at around 21:00. If money is not an issue, try a sunset cruise at around $700, to experience one of the most astonishingly beautiful sunsets in the world. Alternatively relax and enjoy the view on one of the many gorgeous beaches.
