Pay a visit to the largest city in India's Punjab region to find the most sacred of Sikh shrines, the Golden Temple. Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth Sikh guru, and is therefore inextricably linked with the Sikh religion. Many come to this buzzing metropolis as part of a pilgrimage to soak up the serene atmosphere of the temple, but be aware that Amritsar is a noisy and incredibly vibrant destination, filled with adventures to enjoy at every turn.
Sightseeing
The old city, where you'll find the hugely impressive Golden Temple, is a total maze of narrow lanes and intriguing bazaars. Take in the town hall, built by the British in 1866, that still serves as the city's seat of power, or join one of the twice-daily heritage walks to learn more about the area's layered past. A visit to Gobindgarh Fort is also a great idea. Work began here in the mid-18th century and it is the only surviving structure of its type dating back to the times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Hop on board a cycle rickshaw if you want a convenient way of getting around Amritsar and the opportunity for some respite from the crowded streets. To escape the hubbub of the city, you might also consider taking time to wander through the Jallianwala Bagh public gardens, a site of considerable historical importance. Find time for some quiet reflection at the memorial dedicated to the victims of a massacre that took place in the city in 1919.
Eating out
Street food is incredibly popular in Amritsar and you'll find no shortage of affordable places to eat throughout the city. Take the opportunity to enjoy buttery paratha flatbread, washed down with a glass of refreshing sweet Punjabi lassi. When you're ready for a restaurant meal, consider Thai Chi, renowned for its excellent Chinese and Thai food. Bharawan da Dhaba, which has been specialising in serving local dishes since 1912, is another great choice.
