If you fancy swapping the seaside for shady forests and mountain views, Cyprus has plenty of charming inland getaways where you can properly unwind.
Those seeking something totally off-the-beaten-track, away from Cyprus’ poster-child beach resorts, should make their way into the Troodos Mountains. The interior of the island is rugged and beautiful, with Mount Olympus standing proudly as the highest peak at almost 2000 metres. The mountains are criss-crossed with stunning trails and scenic views, and hidden among the peaks, you’ll find impressive waterfalls, peaceful monasteries and rural villages that feel like stepping back in time. Not to mention, it’s a cooler (greener) relief from the coastal temperatures in summer.
New Helvetia Hotel in Pano Platres is a great base for your mountain holiday. It’s a popular mountain lodge that’s been family-run for over 100 years. The inside is simple but modern and very comfortable, offering stunning views from balconies and windows. You can choose from double, triple and family rooms, as well as maisonette suites that are perfectly spacious for a longer stay. There’s a buffet breakfast, an à la carte restaurant with a forest-view terrace, and a cosy pine-tree lounge bar. The hotel can provide walking and cycling routes (some starting right from the village) and nordic walking poles if you require them.
A stay in Kakopetria offers a wonderful sense of escapism from your daily life. This village in the foothills has beautiful, traditional architecture – stone houses with dark-wood balconies and roofs. Cobbled streets and small rivers wind their way through the village, with its shady squares, outdoor eateries and historic churches.
Maritsa Lodge is a guest favourite with a rustic charm. The bed-and-breakfast celebrates its original features, with a cosy interior, and many outdoor spaces offering stunning views whichever way you turn. The spacious rooms have everything you need for a walking holiday and there’s a continental breakfast on offer too. If you come in winter, you can even book a room with a roaring fire. A stay here guarantees one thing – peace and seclusion.
Best for: Nature lovers and hikers seeking cooler temperatures
Don’t miss: A visit to a waterfall, the Troodos botanical gardens or an adventurous rope park
With so many great spots across Cyprus, picking the right hotel can feel like a bit of a puzzle. Whether you’re after beach views, buzzing nightlife or a quiet village escape, here’s what to keep in mind.
Your main holiday aim is to spend time swimming in the bath-like waters of the Mediterranean? Coral Bay is conveniently close to Paphos with a classic beach-resort feel, while Ayia Napa is ideal for combining beach days with party nights. Protaras has plenty of luxury accommodation on offer, and the sea is exceptional for snorkelling and swimming.
If romance is the main goal of your holiday, we recommend the two harbour-side destinations – Limassol Marina and Kato Paphos. Both have charming waterfront walks for romantic sojourns in the evenings, and plenty to do during the day too. You’ll be spoilt for choice of swanky restaurants and bars for a date night, and there are plenty of boutique hotels to choose from to make your stay feel special. If you’re craving a classic beach holiday, make for Protaras. The crystal-clear waters here are enough of a draw, but there are plenty of fun water sports activities to keep you occupied, too. Go for an all-inclusive resort and know all your date dinners are taken care of.
Paphos is one of the most convenient destinations to visit with your family, thanks to direct flights from the UK. There’s everything here - culture, great food and fantastic swimming - and the atmosphere is very family friendly. Protaras has fewer cultural attractions but phenomenal sea swimming and a great choice of luxurious yet family-friendly hotels. Adventurous families should head for the hills and go walking in the Troodos mountains.
Paphos is a history buff’s dream, with enough antiquities to keep you busy for weeks on end. It’s also a real cultural hub for Cypriots, bursting with things to do, places to eat and experiences to try. Larnaca and Limassol too, both have their share of history and the sense of real, lived-in cities. If you want escapism and culture, Kakopetria is the place for you. The village is oozing with history and, in the Troodos mountains, you’ll find ancient churches, storied monasteries and vineyards to visit.
Can’t decide? Can’t blame you. Almost every corner of Cyprus has something different to offer. You could split your stay with a week in the mountainous interior and a week on the sun-soaked coast. Or, if you stay in Limassol or its Germasogeia district, you’re only around an hour’s drive from the heart of the Troodos mountains and the Holy Monastery of Panagia Machaira.
Top tip: Book early for peak summer dates, but walking is fantastic in April/May/October too
Don’t miss: All-inclusive packages to Cyprus that cover flights, hotels and meals so you can leave your brain behind when you check your baggage
