From the top there are amazing views of Cape Town, Robben Island, and the Peninsula.
Local history
Cape Town has a fascinating history to explore and one of the best places to visit is Robben Island. This famous island is where Nelson Mandela was confined and was used as a prison right up until 1996. Today the prison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be explored in special 4-hour tours, which include the ferry ride to the island and back. The tours start at the Nelson Mandela Gateway, which is a museum that has some fascinating exhibits about Mandela and the prison.
Two Oceans Aquarium
If you’re keen to explore some of Cape Town’s fantastic wildlife, a great way to start your trip is with a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium. The aquarium’s exhibits are specially designed to showcase the amazingly diverse wildlife found off the coast of Cape Town. You can see family favourites like clown fish and monsters of the deep like the Ragged-tooth sharks. There’s also a collection of Rockhopper penguins that you can meet and play with if you book the penguin encounter. The best time to visit the aquarium is during one of the feeding times, so make sure you check the times before you visit.
Botanical Gardens
If you want to explore some of the stunning Cape Town countryside you should visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens which are spread over 36 hectares. The gardens have 9,000 different species of African plants and flowers. There are free guided walks on offer, as well as electronic guides, which you can hire if you prefer to explore by yourself.
Make sure you don’t miss the fragrance garden, which contains an amazing collection of plants specially selected for their wonderful scents. The plants are even raised up to make it easier for you to smell them. The gardens also have a brilliant gift shop, where you can pick up some souvenirs to take home.
