Out and about

There's an awful lot to occupy visitors to Haarlem. Take time to explore the city's numerous cultural attractions, including the Frans Hals Museum, dedicated to the life and works of 17th-century portrait painter Frans Hals.

The Corrie ten Boom House tells the story of a Christian Dutch family, who bravely gave assistance to Jews and resistance members wanted by the Nazis during the Second World War. Take in the impressive architecture on show at the Cathedral of Sint Bavo and pay a visit to Teylers Museum, the Netherlands' first and oldest museum, dedicated to art and science.

Alternatively, you could find a café in the Haarlem's Grote Markt and watch the world go by, or head for The Netherland's National Park to the west of the city. The area is home to more than 100 different species of birds as well as Dutch bison, deer and wild horses. The park has cycling and walking trails to enjoy, sand dunes, a beach, and military bunkers left over from the Second World War.

Shopping

You'll find excellent shopping in the city and since many areas have been pedestrianised, wandering through Haarlem's cobbled streets and browsing in shop windows is a relaxing pastime. Major department stores can be found here, including HEMA and V&D, as well as many national and international brands.

Wander down Grote Houtstraat, and the surrounding streets of Kleine Houtstraat and Gierstraat, and you'll also come across a great deal of independent stores, from children's toy shops to fashion boutiques.
