Witney was an important medieval market town and a market can still be found each week in the centre of town. The buttercross in the market square was built in around 1600 and a clock was added later in 1683. The buttercross takes its name from the location traders would use to buy and sell butter and eggs. Today you can find everything from fresh local produce to clothing in the market, as well as woollen blankets. The town has been famous for the production of woollen blankets since the Middle Ages and The Blanket Hall on the high street was built in 1721 for the purpose of weighing and sorting the blankets.
Aside from the market, Witney is home to a range of high street shops as well as a number of chic independent shops. The Marriotts Walk shopping centre is home to various well-known brands including Marks & Spencer and Debenhams. Also in Whitney is the Woolgate Shopping Centre, which has a car park with 800 parking spaces.
Witney boasts a collection of interesting museums. The Witney and District Museum tells the story of the town's long heritage and features a fascinating exhibition on the blanket trade. Cogges Manor Farm Museum is an immersive museum that lets visitors step back in time to experience working life on a Victorian farm. Also worth paying a visit to is the Bishop's Palace, a series of archaeological remains from the 12th-century residence of the Bishop of Winchester.
The 30-acre space of Witney Lake and Meadow is home to a diverse range of wildlife and is a popular spot for bird watchers. Also within easy reach of the town centre is The Cotswolds. The Cotswolds is renowned as a place to enjoy the outdoors, whether you plan on hiking, cycling, horse riding or fishing. There are a vast number of walking routes in and around Witney to enjoy for trekkers of all abilities. Bikes can be easily rented from one of the many nearby cycling centres and there are also a number of Cotswold Riding Schools if you'd like to try your hand at horse riding.
A short drive east from Whitney is the ancient city of Oxford. As well as shops, museums, restaurants and pubs, Oxford is where you'll find the historical buildings of Oxford University.
