There has been a crossing on the River Thames here since Roman times, although evidence of human habitation stretches as far back as the Neolithic era at Staines Moor. Within a decade of the first Roman invasion there was a bridge linking Londinium to Silchester, and the Roman's knew this place as Pontes, or ‘Bridges'. A number of historically significant events have occurred at Staines, such as an assembly of the Barons before meeting King John at Runnymede in 1215 and the trial of Thomas More that took place in a public house here, away from the plague-ridden capital. Its position on the vital ancient river crossing means that numerous Kings and Queens will have passed this way through the ages.
Until the mid-19th century the parish of Staines remained mostly agricultural, with the town a regular staging post with coaching inns. Linoleum manufacture saw a successful industrial phase develop in the 1860s and a bronze statue of two lino workers in the High Street commemorates this trade today.
