Bents Park, on the town's seafront, is an historic green space that is perfect for picnics and walks. During the summer the town hosts live events here such as Proms in the Park and the South Tyneside Summer Festival. Between the park and the sea is Sandhaven, a beach that is long, sandy and unspoiled. Marsden Bay, less than two miles down the coast, is an appealing melange of white sands and rock pools, teeming with muscles and crabs. Here you can explore smugglers' caves nestled within soaring cliffs. The bay is a nirvana for walkers and wildlife lovers. Ascend the cliff steps and look out for cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes and fulmars that form part of the seabird colonies on this breathtaking section of shoreline. And what's more, you'll have great views of Marsden Rock, Camel Island and beyond.
The windswept limestone cliffs known as The Leas constitute a two mile stretch that provides more stirring vistas. You'll find a series of paths here, some of which lead down to fascinating coves and caves, and beautiful bays. Located at the far end of the Leas is the world's first lighthouse designed to be powered by electricity. Souter lighthouse cuts a dash in its red and white hooped livery and is now maintained by the National Trust. Enter this coastal watchtower and see the cramped conditions in which the men had to work. Ascend the steep steps and you'll be rewarded with incredible 360° views from the light tower.
South Marine Park is a fun hive of activity for the whole and includes a giant sandpit complete with diggers and two miniature steam trains. Here you can stop off at the lake to feed the ducks before riding on pedalo. There are plenty of green spaces for ball games, frisbee throwing and in the summer, relax and listen to a brass band play at the Victorian bandstand. Neighbouring North Marine Park provides a genteel alternative where you can pitch and putt or play bowls.
