Originally founded by the Saxons, the earliest written record of Okehampton is from 980AD where the settlement appears as ‘Ocmundtune', a settlement by the river running through the town, named the Ockment at that time.
As with many West Country towns, Okehampton thrived from the wool trade in the medieval ages. There are many notable buildings in the town from this time, such as the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle.
Step back in time at Okehampton Castle, the remains of the largest castle in Devon, located on a beautiful wooded hill above the River Okement. The Norman Sheriff of Devon, Baldwin FitzGilbert, built the castle as a motte and bailey type with a stone keep, and during the 14th century it was converted into a sumptuous residence by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of which survives today. After the last Courtenay owner died at the hands of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin. A pretty riverside picnic area along with some beautiful woodland walks is close by, which is also a superb bird-spotting area.Â
Visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life where the fascinating collections and interactive displays bring to life 'the people's story' for all ages. See a reconstructed Bronze Age hut, a Victorian kitchen, blacksmith's shop and realistic farming exhibits. Learn about traditional industries such as glassmaking, quarrying and rural crafts. Youngsters can also explore discovery zones and dress up in historical costumes to set their imaginations alight.
The more energetic visitor will enjoy the Heights of Dartmoor walk, which is 2.5 miles of valley to moorland walk with a steep climb and spectacular views over Okehampton and far-off Exmoor.
Okehampton offers a wide selection of eateries to suit all tastes, from 16th-century inns with original wooden features to modern cafés, coffee shops and restaurants.
Enjoy a traditional Devon tea at the Victorian Pantry Tea Rooms, which offer a friendly family run service as well as delicious home-cooked food for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.
Try a Sunday carvery or something from the à la carte menu at the cosy Betty Cottles Inn, which prides itself in its great home cooked meals and friendly service. The White Hart, a traditional coaching inn situated in the centre of Okehampton, also offers a traditional Sunday carvery, with a choice of roasted local meats.
