Historians have traced the lineage of Leatherhead to around 880, when it was known as Leodridan or ‘place people can ride across the river' in Old English. One of the oldest buildings in the town is The Running Horse, a pub dating back to 1403. The pub was originally known as Rumming's House and, apparently, Queen Elizabeth I once stayed in the pub after floods made the river Mole impossible to cross.
Another destination for history buffs is Leatherhead Museum, set within two minutes' walk of the high street. The museum is housed in an elegant 17th-century building, and holds a number of interesting objects charting the town's history including old photographs and maps of the area. Admission is free and there is a souvenir shop selling postcards and education items.
Nearby Leatherhead is Polesden Lacey, a Regency-era villa where King George VI spent his honeymoon with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The villa also features over 1,400 acres encompassing two farms, formal grounds and a lot of woodland.
Leatherhead is home to a number of attractive outdoor spaces, including The Mansion Gardens – an elegant place to enjoy a picnic or take a romantic stroll. If you'd rather kick a ball around than sit on a bench with a good book, Fortyfoot Recreation Ground offers a number of sporting activities. Ashtead Common is a larger and slightly wilder area to explore, perfect for woodland walks and rambles through nature.
As well as Fortyfoot Recreation Ground, the Leatherhead Leisure Centre is a great choice if you're looking to work up a sweat. Outdoors there's space to play everything from cricket to football, and indoor there are three swimming pools, a sprawling sports hall and The Tone Zone Fitness Suite – perfect for keeping up your exercise routine. If you're travelling with kids, the leisure centre also features the Crazy Tots soft play area.
Leatherhead is a short drive from London, and within an hour you'll find yourself in the heart of the city where you can visit everything from Buckingham Palace to Big Ben. If you travel south from Leatherhead you'll eventually reach South Downs National Park – an area of exceptional natural beauty and well worth a daytrip.
