Whether you're travelling for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, Ingleton is a great place to get away from hectic city life and experience North Yorkshire's world-famous countryside. Celebrated for its caves and waterfalls, the area boasts hundreds of different walks that take in everything from the Limestone Dales, Ingleborough Summit and an impressive network of caves and gorges.

Caves

Gaping Gill is one of the country's most popular potholing destinations, with water falling over 110 metres before hitting the ground of the cave. White Scar Caves is another famous destination, dating back to the ice age, and there are guided tours of areas in the cave including the 90-metre long Battlefield Cavern. If you're travelling with kids, head to the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail for a trek through ancient woodland and a chance to see some of the country's most spectacular waterfalls.

History

For history buffs, the area has a rich heritage dating back to the Iron Age. Ingleton is home to the first Hoffman kiln, which can still be seen in Mealbank quarry. Head to The Church of St. Mary's and you'll find a Norman font with a history of over 800 years. Ask at the tourist centre for a trail that will take you through the archaeological history of the area.

North Yorkshire

Travel outside of Ingleton and within a few minutes by car you'll find yourself in Morecombe, or head north and you'll soon be in Kendal. From Kendal you're only a stone's throw from the Lake District – another area of staggering natural beauty encompassing areas such as Windermere. If you're looking to head to a city, Leeds is a short journey to the south where you'll find an excellent selection of museums, art galleries, restaurant and bars.
