Huntly Castle

Perhaps Huntly's biggest draw is its 12th-century castle. Huntly Castle sits in a scenic position beside the River Deveron, and is well worth a visit. It is now, unfortunately, all ruins but there is still plenty to see.

The castle was briefly home to Robert the Bruce during the 14th century and is still a source of fierce local pride. The palace block, built relatively recently during the 16th century, has a unique L-shaped tower with defensive ramparts used to repel attackers during the Civil War.

Leith Hall and Garden

Another hefty slice of Huntly's heritage can be found at Leith Hall and Gardens. A tour of the house is essential and free for National Trust members. It includes a look at its unique 18th-century stables, a must for horse lovers.

Keen horticulturalists will be in heaven in Leith Hall's gardens, which include Scotland's greatest collection of alpines and primulas. The six-acre garden also includes a rare Chinese moon gate, from which you can enjoy views of the spectacular surrounding hills.

If you're looking for a bit more of an adventure, there are three signposted walks that lead off from the gardens into luscious woodland. Of these, the Pond Walk is most suitable for those with small children.

Whisky business

Those of you who have a taste for scotch will be glad to hear that Huntly is on the edge of the famous Speyside Whisky Trail, which takes in some of the finest distilleries in the world. Your Huntly hotel is an excellent base from which to embark on this sensuous experience.

If you're not too keen on leaving town for your dram, which is very understandable, never fear for Huntly is home to Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky. The distillery has one of the largest collections of rare Scotch whisky casks. It also offers fantastic tours that demonstrate the entire whisky making process, from the ground to the mouth.

Taste of Huntly

After a couple of drams your stomach will probably be rumbling. Luckily Huntly has some fine eating establishments to suit all your needs. The Park Lane Café is a charming little spot in the centre of town serving up quality British grub in an unfussy environment.

A more formal dining experience can be found at The Dining Room at the Castle Hotel. This restaurant has a comprehensive menu of mostly modern French cuisine and a wonderful bar, where you can grab a cocktail before your meal.
