While Great Malvern is largely Victorian in its appearance and history, the town's roots go back much further than the late 1800s. During the Iron and Bronze Ages, the town was simply a scattering of small cottages with forts and tracks running along the hills. The Priory Church was founded in 1085 when Benedictine monks settled here and built a priory, which was a daughter house to Westminster Abbey in London.
Therapeutic springs have always been a part of Great Malvern, originally a spa village, and the Victorians often used water as a cure, thus the town became popular to the ailing. There are many wells and springs throughout Malvern, often well-concealed, which gives a great opportunity for a treasure hunt! Some are well-restored like the Beauchamp Spout in Cowleigh Road and the Malvhina fountain at Belle Vue Island, while others are more obscure.
Malvern is a historic haven for famous authors, with C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien among the better known. Apparently, when walking home from the pub with friends one winter's evening, Lewis saw a lamp-post shining out through the snow and said, "That would make a very nice opening line to a book." The rest, as they say, is Narnian history.
The town has many attractions for visitors to enjoy: a theatre, the Morgan car factory, the Malvern Museum of Local History, stately homes and gardens. There are also many local amenities including the Malvern Theatres complex, a park, a swimming pool, a library, and a large indoor and outdoor sports facility.
Occupying a large section of the centre of town, The Priory Park and the adjoining Malvern Splash Pool and Winter Gardens hold many hours of enjoyment for all.
June sees Malvern Fringe Festival take place over three days as a fringe to the Elgar Festival. The Malvern May Day and Parade is another annual community event, held in Priory Park on the Saturday before the May Bank Holiday.
Great Malvern has plenty of great eateries on offer to visitors. Enjoy high tea at The Terrace on the Hill or The Cake Tin, sample some French delicacies at L'amuse Bouche Restaurant or enjoy some good gastropub food at The Inn at Welland.
